St. Catherine's Monastery
on Mount Sinai

Picture
Set beneath the mountain where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments, Saint Catherine's Monastery has been one of the world’s great centers of religious pilgrimage for over fifteen centuries. Within its imposing walls rests a citadel like no other, incredibly rich in important religious and historical structures. Among its treasures is a library of ancient manuscripts and icons second only to the Vatican's itself, and a 6th century church reputed to lie directly on the site of the Burning Bush. Quite simply, the monastery is a defining feature of the Holy Land.

The Glory of Byzantium

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's on-line exploration of Byzantium was created in conjunction with the international loan exhibition The Glory of Byzantium (March 11 - July 6, 1997), which celebrated the art of the second golden age of Byzantine art (843 - 1261). This on-line exploration moves beyond the time frame of the exhibition and includes examples of art from the first golden age of Byzantine art (324 - 730) and the late period, which ended with the Turkish conquest in 1453.

This on-line exploration can be accessed in a number of ways:

  • Explore Byzantine works of art
  • Investigate a theme in Byzantine art
  • Probe the history of Byzantium
  • View the works of art in a visual timeline
  • Check a definition in the glossary
  • They have also developed a special resource area for teachers
