In Memory of our Beloved Founding Abbot, Archimandrite Theodor
"Well done, good and faithful servant! Enter into the joy of your Lord!" (Matthew 25:23)
The funeral and burial of our founding abbot, Archimandrite Theodor, took place on June 21, 2014. Representing our Bishop was Archpriest James Jorgenson, who sent this report to our Diocese:
"On Saturday, June 21, Archimandrite Theodor Micka was buried at his beloved Holy Cross Monastery in Castro Valley, CA. Serving at the Liturgy and Funeral were Frs. Stephen and Peter from the monastery, Fr. James Jorgenson, and Fr. Michael Anderson, and other local priests from various jurisdictions were in attendance. Also coming to pray and pay their respects on Friday and Saturday were many friends of Fr. Theodor and the monastery. In his eulogy, Fr. Stephen spoke of how Fr. Theodor guided him in the Orthodox Faith and how from the earliest years they shared the common vision of monastic life, their search for property, and the realization of this vision in the construction and expansion of their present monastery, doing so much of the work by hand and by themselves, often from morning to evening. After the interment, Orthodox of all backgrounds and ages and representatives of numerous ethnic groups spoke of how Fr. Theodor touched their lives with his warm hospitality and friendship, and his pastoral love for all: Romanians, Bulgarians, Russians, Serbs, Greeks, Arabs, Copts, Ethiopians, Indian Orthodox, and also State Senator Ellen Corbett, the Russian Consul from San Francisco, and members of the local community. A common theme echoed so often was how Fr. Theodor 'took us in' and 'made us feel loved, welcomed, and at home.' A memorial luncheon, with foods brought by the many friends of the monastery, followed on the monastery grounds.
Memory Eternal!
